If a laptop that was assigned to a student is declared lost or stolen, the student regardless of current academic status needs to report the equipment loss/ stolen with Public Safety and the Police Department in the area of the machine was last seen. Examples:

  • If the student lost a device or device was stolen in the airport, TSA must be notified

  • If the student lost device or device was stolen in New York City, that specific NYPD precinct needs to be notified.

  • If the student lost device or device was stolen abroad, that country's/ town's police department must be notified.

 Once the police department is notified, a copy of the police report needs to be sent to Public Safety. Public Safety will need a Police report number specifically. Public Safety will notify the designated list of St. John’s University personal of an incident. Copy of Public Safety incident report is sent to IT with users' information.

 SJU Student Laptop Lost / Stolen Procedure

In order to file a Lost/Stolen report, the student must:

  1. File a police report with the local Police Department in the area in which it was Lost/Stolen in. (If the laptop was Lost/Stolen while out-of-state, it must be reported there.)

  2. File an incident report with Public Safety at St. John’s University to report the laptop Lost/Stolen.

  3. Once the Public Safety incident report is completed, there will be a Loss of University Property fee assessed to the student’s bursar account. The following form must be taken to Bursar to have the payment verified.
