The Office of Information Technology continues the work needed to help ensure the security of our systems and data. This includes securing access to our systems, even when our employees are not physically working within our campus locations.

On Wednesday, June 22, 2022, remote access from your University-issued laptop via our virtual private network (VPN) will change. The current VPN application (Cisco AnyConnect) will be phased out and replaced by a similar application, GlobalProtect, which offers added security features.

The most notable change is all users will be required to use multifactor authentication to log in, which is similar to how many of you log in to UIS, email, and other applications through signon.stjohns.edu.

The existing Cisco VPN will no longer be active after September 14, 2022.

Also, please note you will only be able to use VPN from a University-issued laptop, as installed and managed by the Office of Information Technology.

After this date, access to VPN from any personal devices or laptops not issued through our office will no longer work

GlobalProtect will be automatically installed on your laptop. If you are unable to access or locate this application, please submit a help ticket.

To access the new VPN:

  1. Windows devices: https://ithelp.stjohns.edu/support/solutions/articles/16000055779
    • The GlobalProtect application can be accessed through your Program List, as well as from the  icon, visible by clicking on the arrow  on the bottom right of your screen.

  1. Apple devices: https://ithelp.stjohns.edu/support/solutions/articles/16000055780
    • During the automatic install, you will be prompted for your credentials.
    • Once installed, you can access Global Protect in three ways:
      • Access the Gray Globe in the top menu bar
      • In your Applications Folder
      • In your Launchpad

Your user ID and password will not change. Please continue using your network credentials to log on to VPN.

If you need assistance accessing the new VPN application, or do not see it installed on your device, please contact the Office of Information Technology Service Desk by creating a ticket here.
