Closed Captioning is a tool that allows users to understand what is being said in a video without having to use audio. This is a best practice for deaf and hard-of-hearing faculty, students, and staff, but is also utilized by many other users as well. It is highly suggested that any videos that you produce for classes or for training purposes utilize this tool.
Things to Note Before Producing Your Video:
Finish editing your video footage before creating captions. Captions should be your final step in the video production process, in order to ensure clean transitions and accurate information.
When you caption a video, this results in two files: a file containing the audiovisual content, and a caption file that contains the audio transcript, as well as encoded time stamps. These captioning files are typically a .srt file (SubRip Text).
Speech-to-Text or auto-captioning programs have improved over time and have a high level of accuracy, but they are not perfect. Make sure to ALWAYS go back through the captions that come from these programs to make corrections and edits.
Adding Captions to Panopto Videos
Create or upload your video into Panopto as usual. Captioning occurs after the video is uploaded and processed.
Open the video in the Panopto Editor. On your left-hand side, select the “Captions” tab.
Select the “import captions’ dropdown menu.
Select “Import automatic captions.” If the video already has captions, select “replace with automatic captions.”
When you are happy with the captions, select “Apply.”
Editing Captions on Panopto Videos
Open the video in the Panopto editor. On your left-hand side, select the “Captions” tab.
Click on the caption that you wish to edit, and it will become editable. When you’re finished editing the caption, press the “Enter” key to save the changes. (Note: to insert a line break, press Shift+Enter)
When you’re finished editing all captions, select the Apply button in the upper right corner of the editor to save all changes.
Editing Timestamp for Captions on Panopto Videos
Open the video in the Panopto editor. On your left-hand side, select the “Captions” tab.
To the right of the caption, click the three dots to see more options.
Select “Edit,” and when the edit window opens, you can click to edit the start and end time for captions.
Select “Save” to confirm edits, then select “Apply.”
Deleting Captions on Panopto Videos
Open the video in the Panopto editor. On your left-hand side, select the “Captions” tab.
To the right of the caption, click the three dots to see more options.
Select “Delete.”
When you are finished deleting the caption(s), select “Apply.”
