Respondus LockDown Browser is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment within a Learning Management System (LMS) such as Canvas, helping to prevent cheating during exams.
How do I add this LTI to my course?
If you plan to use LockDown Browser in your Canvas course, you will need to have the LTI enabled in the Canvas Course Navigation menu, and it must stay enabled. The LTI link in the Course Navigation menu is not visible to users with a “Student” role in the course.
Open the course in Canvas.
Go to the course Settings, and open the Navigation tab.
Under the section labeled “Drag items here to hide them from students,” locate Lockdown Browser and either click-and-drag to the Course Navigation section at the top, or select the three dots on the right hand side and select “Enable.”
Click and drag Lockdown Browser to the appropriate location in your list of enabled apps, then scroll to the bottom of the page and click “Save.”
Select Lockdown Browser from the Course Navigation menu
You should now see the Respondus LockDown Browser Dashboard. This will list all of the Quizzes that you have available in your course, along with a down arrow on the left-side of the quiz title so that you can open the settings for LockDown Browser.
How do I enable LockDown Browser on my Canvas Quiz?
Open your Canvas Course and select LockDown Browser in your Course Navigation menu. If LockDown Browser is not in your Course Navigation menu, please add it to your course using the steps outlined above.
Locate the appropriate quiz and select the down arrow on the left-hand side of the Quiz name, then choose “Settings.”
-
Select “Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this exam.” You can then select the other settings for the exam as needed for your use-case. Some examples include:
Require LockDown Browser to view post-exam feedback and results (located in LockDown Browser Advanced Settings) - this would require students to use LockDown Browser in order to access any notes or correct answers that you have provided to them after the exam is complete.
Lock Students into the browser until the exam is completed (located in LockDown Browser Advanced Settings) - this means that students will not be able to close LockDown Browser until they are ready to submit their response to the quiz.
-
Require Respondus Monitor - this will record the students Webcam and/or their Screen while they are taking the exam, so that you can review later.
If Proctoring is enabled, you can also toggle what you would like to include in the “Startup Sequence” when the students begin the exam. You can add customized additional instructions, Guidelines and Tips, require a Student Photo and ID, and require an environment check.
Allow use of an iPad for this exam (located in Proctoring Advanced Settings) - iPads by default are allowed when using LockDown Browser, however if you enable Proctoring with Respondus Monitor, you will have to enable this option for iPad users, as the application on iPad does not allow screen recording, only webcam.
Once your LockDown Browser settings are set up as desired, select “Save + Close” at the bottom of the Quiz settings to save all changes.
I copied a course from a previous semester where I was using LockDown Browser, but my new students can’t access the Quiz in LockDown Browser. What do I do?
If you were using LockDown Browser in a previous semester’s course and copied it into a new course, everything is published, but your students can’t access the Quiz in LockDown Browser, it is likely that the LockDown Browser LTI has not been “activated” in your new Canvas course. In the new Canvas course, select “LockDown Browser” in your Course Navigation menu. Once you click this in the new Canvas course, it should be “activated” and ready for your students to use.
Canvas never guarantees that LTI settings will remain after copying a course, so please make sure that you check the quiz settings for all LockDown Browser-enabled quizzes after copying a course.
