This guide assumes that you have added Panopto to your Canvas course already. If you need help adding Panopto to your Course Navigation, see Panopto Video LTI Support (IT Help article). If you have added it but you aren’t sure how to access your course folder, please see How do I create a Panopto Video folder in my Canvas course (IT Help article - coming soon!).

.

You can add content to your Panopto folder a few different ways. You can click the “+ Create” button at the top of your folder view, drag-and-drop a file into your folder, or record the video directly from the Panopto desktop application. This guide will only go through using the “+ Create” button and the drag-and-drop method. For information on recording using the Panopto desktop application, please see Panopto’s documentation for your respective OS: How to Record with Panopto for Windows (Panopto Support article) and How to Record with Panopto for Mac (Panopto Support article).

.

  1. Open Panopto Video in your Canvas course and ensure that the folder name matches the course name.

  2. Click on Create at the top of your screen to get started in adding media to your course folder. You will see many options for adding a recording to your folder; select the one that is appropriate for your use.

    • Panopto for [Mac // Windows] - selecting this option will either prompt you to install the Panopto desktop application on your computer, or will launch the app if it is already installed. For more help with installing the Panopto desktop application, please see the appropriate link at the bottom of this page.

    • Panopto Capture - selecting this option will initiate a recording using the online version of Panopto. For more help with using the Panopto Capture option in browser, please see the appropriate link at the bottom of this page.

    • Upload media - selecting this option will prompt you to select the file from your computer to upload to your computer. Use this option if you already have the recorded video file.

    • Scheduled recording - this option is only available for St. John’s Law School remote recorders. You likely will not see this option available to you.

    • Playlist - selecting this option will prompt you to create a playlist using a set of videos that have already been uploaded to Panopto. For more information on playlists, please see the appropriate link at the bottom of this page.

    • New Folder - selecting this option will allow you to create a sub-folder inside of your class folder, allowing you to organize your videos more effectively if you have many of them.

  1. If uploading or recording a video, the uploading process may take a few moments to finish, based on the size and amount of files. Please stay on the screen until the uploading process is complete.

  2. Once the upload process is complete, you can close the window. The video sessions must still be processed for playback in Panopto, but once processed you should receive an email notification when the sessions are ready to view or edit. There are certain factors, such as bitrate, aspect ratio, file size, and video length, which can impact the time it takes for the video to process. For supported media file types, see Learn About Supported Media File Types for Uploading (Panopto Support article). To learn how to edit your videos, please visit: How to Edit a Video (Panopto Support article).
