Updated August 26, 2025
Effective September 15, 2025, Microsoft is deprecating their legacy LTIs, “Microsoft Teams meetings” and “Microsoft Teams classes” in favor of a preview of their new LTI, “Microsoft Education.” For the most updated information from Microsoft on this transition, see their article, Teams Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI®) sunset FAQ (linked).
What is the New “Microsoft Education” LTI?
The new “Microsoft Education” LTI is a new application that combines all of the previous Microsoft LTIs into one location, with a path towards adding new applications as well. The “Microsoft Education” LTI is currently only in Preview, but is constantly getting updates and fixes from Microsoft. For more information on using this LTI in your Canvas course, please see our help article: Microsoft Education 365 LTI Support (linked).
What does Deprecation look like?
Microsoft has confirmed that they are completely sunsetting their legacy “Microsoft Teams meetings” and “Microsoft Teams classes” LTIs. This means that effective September 15th, these two LTIs will not function in Canvas. Any Teams meetings that you set up previously using the Teams Meetings LTI will ONLY be accessible through Microsoft Teams itself. Any Teams classes that you set up previously using the Teams Classes LTI will be accessible through Microsoft Teams itself or through the new LTI, “Microsoft Education.”
Why is Microsoft doing this?
Microsoft has made the decision to move away from having multiple LTIs, transitioning instead towards a more unified experience. This is being done for security purposes, as well as to encourage a more modern interface.
What do I do if I have already scheduled my Fall 2025 Class Meetings?
Good on you for being ahead of the game! If you already scheduled your Fall 2025 class meetings using the legacy “Microsoft Teams meetings” LTI, you have two options: continue to use the meetings by starting the meetings from the Teams application, or reschedule the meetings using the new Microsoft Education LTI. We strongly recommend rescheduling the meetings using the new Microsoft Education LTI, as your previous meetings may have issues with class roster. To do this, follow the steps below:
Open the legacy “Microsoft Teams meetings” LTI in Canvas before September 15th, or open the Microsoft Teams application, and locate the meetings that you created using the legacy LTI
Cancel the meetings, or series of meetings if applicable. If prompted, click “Send Cancellation.”
Open the new “Microsoft Education” LTI in your Canvas course and navigate to the “Teams Meetings” app
Click “New Meeting” in the top right, and enter the necessary details for your course meetings. If applicable, click the “Allow anyone in the course to join” checkbox, which will allow students to join the meeting via the Teams Meeting app, or click “Add entire class” to send the students a calendar invite, adding it to their Outlook and Teams calendars, in addition to allowing them access to the meeting via the Teams Meetings app.
Click the “Save” button.
What about previous documents I’ve linked using “Office 365” or “Microsoft OneDrive” LTIs?
If you previously used the “Office 365” or “Microsoft OneDrive” LTIs to link documents from your OneDrive to your Canvas course, you have nothing to worry about! While we are disabling the ability to add new links using these legacy LTIs, your previous links will continue to function until Microsoft deprecates their “Microsoft OneDrive” LTI in 2026. To add new links to your courses, please utilize the new “Microsoft Education” LTI.
