Note that the steps below are geared towards using the Microsoft Word Desktop app, as that is the SJU IT recommended product. However, depending on your professor’s assignment preferences, Authorship may also be enabled in Google Docs to generate a report that way. Please discuss this with your professor before using Google Docs.
For a video copy of these instructions, please see the following YouTube video from Grammarly: Student user guide
Install Grammarly on the device you are using. If using Google Docs or Word Online, you will need to enable it in Chrome. If using the Microsoft Word desktop app, you will need to download and install Grammarly for Windows/Mac. For instructions, please see the following linked IT Help article: Grammarly.
Once Grammarly is installed, open a new Word document and look for the thumbprint in the bottom left corner of your screen. If prompted, sign in using your SJU email address and password.
Turn on "Track your writing," then click "OK" in the pop-up that appears. If other permissions prompts pop-up as well, enable them at your discretion.
Enter some text into the document, then click on the thumbprint in the bottom left corner again. If you see an option "See Report," then Authorship is working. If you do not, please try the above steps again, and reach out to IT if you continue to experience issues.
Continue working on your document. When finished, click the thumbprint and select "See Report." On the new screen that appears, click "Share" in the top right corner.
Toggle on the option to "Make this report visible to anyone with the link," and check the "Include writing replay" option. Click "Copy" to copy the link, then click "Done."
To submit your assignment with the report in Canvas, open your assignment in Canvas. In the Authorship section, paste the Authorship Report URL into the appropriate box, as shown below, and click the Green "Submit" button directly below the Authorship Report URL:
Submit the document upload itself as usual, using either Upload or Web URL, depending on if you are using Microsoft Word or Google Docs.
Click "Submit Assignment." Once you see the confetti, you're good to go!
