The University is consolidating usernames and passwords used to access University services (e.g. email, UIS) using a new single sign-on system called Okta. This system will make it easier for you to sign in, provide enhanced security, and give you the ability to reset your own password.
We strongly recommend you bookmark https://signon.stjohns.edu/ and use it going forward.
If you have previously logged in to signon.stjohns.edu, but now cannot log in, and need to set your password, please follow these instructions to reset it: How Do I Reset My Forgotten Password?
First-time users of the new Sign-On system will be asked to complete some one-time actions to set up the enhanced security features. Like banks and other financial institutions, we reply to something that you know (your password) and something that you have (your phone) to periodically verify your identity. (This approach is also known as two-factor authentication.)
You will need to select the secondary authentication method you’d like to use. The system can send a text message to your phone, or send a code to an app that runs on your mobile phone (recommended if you have an international phone number), or call any phone number that a computer automated voice will read the code to you.
Once you get signed in successfully, simply click on an icon of the app that you wish to access:

Username: Full email address issued to you
Username: Email address in the format of email@example.com
## = two-digit year that you entered the University
Default Password for First-Time Users:
Capital S, Lowercase j, 8 digits of your ID number listed on your Storm Card ID

If this is the first time that you are logging in to the site, the system will ask you to configure at least one alternative way to verify your identity. This is also known as Multi-Factor Authentication.
The University Supports:
Okta Verify: This is an app on your Smart Device which provides a six-digit PIN number to supplement your username and password. Simply download this app from your Mobile App Store.
**This is the preferred method for those that have an international phone number, or for those who do not have SMS capabilities but have internet access.
SMS: This only works for those with an SMS plan. A six-digit code will be sent in a text message to your phone. If you change your phone number in the future, this method will have to be renewed.
Voice Call: For those that do not have an SMS plan or a Smart Phone, you can choose to have a phone call to a USA-based phone number, in which a computer automated voice will read the six-digit code to you.
OKTA VERIFY app
This setup MUST be initiated through a web browser on a SEPARATE device from the device that you are installing the app on, such as a laptop computer, desktop computer, tablet, etc.
Choose your device type: iPhone or Android. Then, click NEXT. A QR code will appear.
Download the "Okta Verify" app from your device's app store.
Once installed, click on the Plus sign at the bottom of the screen. You will then choose that the Account Type is for a School or a Company. Your camera will open to scan the QR code from the computer you are on. Once your scan is received by the Okta Verify app, you should receive the message on your computer to add an additional authentication, or to click Finish.
SMS AUTHENTICATION SETUPEnter a phone number that can receive text (SMS) messages. Then, press SEND CODE.
** You MUST press the SEND CODE button; it will not send it automatically.
** If you have an international number, please be sure to select the country that the number is from.
Once you have received the text message, enter the code, and click VERIFY.
- PHONE CALL AUTHENTICATION
Enter a phone number that can receive a voice call. This can be a cell phone, a House phone, or an office phone. Then, press "Call". When you answer the call, enter the code that will be issued to you to verify the Call setup.
After completing your Authentication setup, you may choose to add a secondary authentication method to use in the event that you are unable to access another. (For example: If you are in an area with bad cell service and cannot get an SMS, but you have access to the Internet to use the Okta Verify app.)
Once complete, click FINISH.
You will then be taken to a page that will ask you to complete your setup. You will have to choose a security question, and create and answer.
It is required that you enter a phone number to use in the area for resetting your password, via SMS or Voice Call.
You will also be required to choose a security image.
CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD
After signing in for the first time, change your password to something that you will remember.
Password must meet these requirements:
- At least 10 characters
- A lowercase letter
- An uppercase letter
- A number
- A symbol
- No parts of your username
- Does not include your first name
- Does not include your last name
- Your password cannot be any of your last 5 passwords
- At least 6 day(s) must have elapsed since you last changed your password

Once signed in to https://signon.stjohns.edu, click on your name in the upper right corner of the screen, and then click SETTINGS.
You will be asked to confirm your password once more, for security purposes.
- Then, click EDIT PROFILE. Then, enter a phone number to use in one of the following Forgot Password Text Message or Forgot Password Voice Call. If you have an international phone number, please be sure to select the appropriate country.
E-MAIL AUTHENTICATION FOR OUTLOOK
If you use Microsoft Outlook client on your desktop or laptop to check and send emails, you will be prompted every 30 days to re-authenticate.
OKTA E-MAIL NOTIFICATIONS:
Okta will e-mail you if you have logged in from a new browser
Upon first sign-on to a different browser or a new device, you will receive an e-mail with the title “St. John's University-New sign-on notification”. This is not spam. This is a normal behavior of the new Sign-On System. You will receive subsequent e-mails if you register a new device, if you enroll in a new form of MFA, or if your password is reset.
