📣 St. John’s has Released an Update on Canvas! 📣

The St. John’s Canvas team has kept busy over the summer! Below are some of the features you may have missed in past announcements.

  • Follett Discover is now “My Materials”

Follett Discover is now “My Materials”

On May 19th, the Follett Discover tool was updated to the newest version of the app from the Follett Team. The app now appears in your Global Navigation menu as “My Materials,” as shown below:

The My Materials tool allows you to view and access textbooks via the Bookstore, as well as access any Kortext course materials. This is where you will access Follett materials for ALL of your courses. You do not need to go into any specific course for that course’s Follett information!

Panopto has received an Upgrade!

On May 27th, the Panopto LTI tool was upgraded from a 1.1 to a 1.3. This increased security for the tool on the back-end, but also added a feature for Canvas Assignments using Panopto, where you can now grade based on the % watched of a video. Grammarly Authorship is now Available in Assignments

On June 22nd, we rolled out Grammarly Authorship for Canvas Assignments. Grammarly Authorship is a tool that helps instructors and students better understand the writing process by showing how a document was created. It can identify whether text was typed by the student, generated or heavily revised using AI, or copied and pasted from external sources.

For students, Grammarly Authorship may be required as part of an assignment submission, depending on the instructor’s guidelines. For faculty, the tool can be enabled in assignments to provide an authorship report that supports review of student work.

SJU Student Tech Guide

The SJU Student Tech Guide is now available for students in Canvas! This guide was created to help students learn more about the technology available to them at St. John’s, including Wi-Fi, 3-D printing, and other technology resources they may not know about.

Students can view the guide at any time, or add it to their Canvas Dashboard by clicking “Join this Course” after opening the course. Joining the course will also allow students to receive notifications when new announcements or updated information are posted. “Submit Grades to Banner” in Canvas has been Updated

On July 28th, the “Submit Grades to Banner” tool in Canvas received a back-end update. The name and appearance of the tool remain the same, so users should not experience any major changes. However, the tool’s placement in the Course Navigation menu may shift to the bottom of the list.

Elsevier Evolve has Evolved

On July 22nd, the Evolve 1.3 LTI integration was installed in Canvas. This update introduced the Evolve 1.3 LTI, which provides enhanced security, improved authentication, and expanded integration capabilities between Canvas and Evolve resources. The existing Evolve integration remains available, and no significant disruption to user access is expected.

In addition, grade passback functionality has been enabled for the existing Evolve integration, allowing grades from Evolve assessments to be automatically transferred to the Canvas Gradebook.

Fall 2026 Course Publication Date

All Fall 2026 Canvas course sections will automatically be published on August 27, 2026. This change is being made to provide convenience for students and consistency in how courses are deployed in Canvas. Please note that this does not mean instructors need to have all course content ready by that date.

If you are not ready for all content to be available to students on August 27th, we recommend unpublishing individual modules that you do not want students to see yet.
